Medical smart pump troubleshooting tips

Over the years, the use of smart pumps has grown as drug delivery technology has advanced. Even with this progress, there is still a possibility that problems may arise. Smart pumps can have problems, but there are ways to fix them and keep the machine up and running.

Make sure all power supplies are functioning properly

All smart pumps require a constant power supply to operate, so you should always check their power supply if they don't turn on or suddenly turn off. One or both batteries may have little charge, but if you need to replace either one, you'll need to replace both batteries at the same time to ensure that one battery doesn't run out in the future.

Check the back pressure of the pump while it is running

The IV needle may slip out of the vein and into the tissue at the site, which may cause backflow into the tube that creates pressure. Check to see if the back pressure is increasing. If there are any noticeable changes, check the injection site to see if the needle is moving.

Make sure the pump casing is secure

The area where you place the actual smart pump is an important area to inspect. If the housing is damaged, the pump will not have a safe place to connect, which can cause drops and accidental changes to settings. Make sure the casing grips the pump tightly and that there are no signs of cracking or severe damage.

Keep the pump away from the RF source

If a malfunction occurs and you've tried to troubleshoot factors inside the smart pump, you may need to look outside the unit for anything that generates radio waves. High RF may damage the smart pump and cause it to display false readings or error codes. Make sure the pump is kept away from equipment other than medical equipment, which is unlikely to damage it.

Software bugs

Human error can pop up many error codes, but sometimes the problem can stem from the software in your device. When there is a software issue with the smart pump, multiple alarms may sound in the IV or in the device. Some pumps, such as the BD infusion pump, can silence the alarm for up to 120 seconds, but you still need to fix the problem as soon as possible.

The software in the smart pump may require troubleshooting, and you will need to shut down and restart the pump completely. Once the issue in the software is resolved, you need the correct input to start the infusion process again.

It is very important to fix any errors in the patient's smart pump. These troubleshooting tips will help you resolve these issues in a timely manner and ensure the safety and health of your patients.
